How does humble attention prepare the way for redemption?
Read four quiet moments at the opening of Shemot, the midwives' refusal, the people's cry, Moshe's turning aside, and his hesitation, and ask how small acts of attention precede the great events that follow.
A quiet beginning to a great book
The book of Shemot will speak of plagues, a sea, and a mountain in fire. It begins with names, with a new king, and with people whose actions are small and decisive. Redemption in this book starts quietly.
This study accompanies the song for Parashat Shemot, set at Hod in Maqam Bayat, a humble preparation. We read four passages and keep apart what the verses state from what our reading adds.
1. Two women and a kingא.
Exodus 1:15-17 records the king of Egypt speaking to the Hebrew midwives, named Shifra and Pu'ah, and commanding them to kill the male children at birth. The midwives feared HaElohim, did not do as the king had spoken, and let the children live.
The king is not named in these verses; the midwives are. Their action is not a battle but a refusal to carry out harm, and its motive is described as fear of HaElohim. That is our observation of the verses' details.
2. A cry that risesב.
Exodus 2:23-25 says that the children of Yisrael groaned from the labor and cried out, and their plea rose to HaElohim. Elohim heard their groaning, remembered the covenant with Avraham, Yitzchak, and Yaakov, saw the children of Yisrael, and knew.
The cry is not described as a prayer with words; it is a groan from the labor. Yet it rises and is heard. The passage ends with and Elohim knew, leaving its object unstated. We do not fill that silence; we note that attention precedes action in the narrative.
3. Turning aside to seeג.
Exodus 3:1-5 finds Moshe shepherding the flock of Yitro beyond the wilderness. The angel of HaShem appears in a flame from within a bush that burns and is not consumed. Moshe says, let me turn aside and see this great sight. HaShem sees that he turned aside, calls, Moshe, Moshe, and he answers, hineni. Then, do not come near; remove your sandals, for the place is holy ground.
Moshe is at work, caring for someone else's flock, and the call comes after HaShem sees that he turned aside. The first instruction is not a task but a limit and a gesture of humility. As our application, preparation for a great task may begin with stopping to look closely, and with removing something before drawing near.
4. Who am I?ד.
In Exodus 3:11 Moshe says to HaElohim, who am I that I should go to Pharaoh, and that I should bring the children of Yisrael out of Egypt? Verse 12 answers, for I will be with you, and this is your sign: when you bring the people out, you will serve HaElohim on this mountain.
The answer does not say who Moshe is; it says who will be with him. Humility here is not denied or corrected; it is accompanied. Many readers have seen in this exchange a model of leadership, and we offer that only as a reading.
The redemption begins quietly
How does humble attention prepare the way? These passages suggest: through those who refuse to do harm, through a cry heard even without words, through faithful ordinary work, through turning aside to see, and through a question, who am I, answered with presence.
This week, notice one thing in your daily routine that you would usually pass by, and turn aside to look at it. If a task feels too large, write down your own who am I, and beside it one source of help that will be with you.

- Why might the Torah name the midwives but not the king?

- Why might the answer to "who am I" be "I will be with you"?
