The guiding question

How can joy and grief share the same day?

Learning objective

To read the inauguration of the Mishkan, the death of Nadav and Avihu, and the call to holiness as a single movement, and to ask how a community holds celebration and loss together without explaining loss away.

1. The glory appearedא.

Leviticus 9:22 says Aharon lifted his hands toward the people and blessed them, and came down from offering. Verse 23 says Moshe and Aharon entered the Tent of Meeting, came out, blessed the people, and the glory of HaShem appeared to all the people.

Verse 24 adds: fire came out from before HaShem and consumed the offering on the altar; all the people saw, shouted for joy, and fell on their faces. This is the climax the book has been building toward since the commands of Shemot.

2. Fire that was not commandedב.

Leviticus 10:1 says Nadav and Avihu, sons of Aharon, each took his fire pan, put fire and incense in it, and brought before HaShem strange fire, which he had not commanded them. Verse 2 says fire came out from before HaShem and consumed them, and they died before HaShem.

The same phrase, fire coming out from before HaShem, appears in 9:24 and 10:2. The first brings joy; the second brings death. The reasons for their death have been interpreted in many ways, and the text itself says only that the fire was not commanded. We will not add a reason the text does not give.

3. And Aharon was silentג.

Leviticus 10:3 says Moshe said to Aharon: this is what HaShem spoke, saying: through those near to me I will be sanctified, and before all the people I will be honored. And Aharon was silent.

The text records Aharon's response in two words: vayidom Aharon. It does not explain the silence. Interpreters have read it as acceptance, as stunned grief, or as both; we leave it open. As our reflection, the text gives a bereaved father's silence its own verse and does not hurry to fill it.

4. Be holy, for I am holyד.

Leviticus 11:44 says: for I am HaShem your God; sanctify yourselves and be holy, for I am holy; do not defile yourselves with any swarming thing. Verse 45 adds: for I am HaShem who brought you up from the land of Egypt to be your God; be holy, for I am holy.

After the drama of fire and death, the parashah closes with laws of everyday eating and a call to holiness. The text moves from a singular day to ordinary days. As our reading, holiness is not confined to the moment of inauguration; it continues in daily choices.

5. One day, two facesה.

Our passages place the people's joy and Aharon's grief within the same narrative, connected by the same phrase about fire. The text does not let either cancel the other.

So how can joy and grief share a day? These verses do not offer an explanation. They offer a way of standing: honoring what was given, naming what was lost without inventing reasons, allowing silence, and returning to holiness in ordinary life. As our application, a community that celebrates can still make room for the one who is silent.

  1. What does the repetition of the phrase about fire teach about the two events?
  2. Why might the text record Aharon's response only as silence?
  3. How can a celebration make room for someone who is grieving?
