What does it mean to draw near?
To read the opening of Vayikra, the law of salt, and the law of restitution as three foundations of drawing near: being called, keeping covenant, and repairing what was taken from another.
1. He called to Mosheא.
Leviticus 1:1 begins: he called to Moshe, and HaShem spoke to him from the Tent of Meeting, saying. The book of offerings opens with a call, before any instruction is given.
The verb "he called" comes before the subject is named. The small letter in the written word has been interpreted by many; we do not enter that discussion. For our question, it is enough that drawing near begins as a response to being addressed.
2. When a person among you bringsב.
Leviticus 1:2 continues: speak to the children of Yisrael and say to them, when a person among you brings an offering to HaShem, from the animals, from the cattle or from the flock, you shall bring your offering.
The law begins with "adam", a person, and with the word "mikem", from among you. The Hebrew noun for offering, korban, shares its root with drawing near. We note the linguistic connection, which is well known, and draw from it a modest point: an offering is a way of coming close, initiated by a person.
3. The salt of the covenantג.
Leviticus 2:13 says: every meal offering you shall season with salt; do not let the salt of the covenant of your God be lacking from your meal offering; with all your offerings you shall bring salt.
Salt is called "salt of the covenant", and it accompanies every offering. The verse repeats the requirement three ways. As our reflection, drawing near is not a single gesture but something preserved, as salt preserves, within a lasting relationship.
4. Betrayal against HaShem through a neighborד.
Leviticus 5:21 says: when a person sins and commits a betrayal against HaShem by denying to his fellow a deposit, a pledge, a robbery, or by withholding from his fellow. Verse 22 adds finding a lost object and denying it, swearing falsely.
Wrongs against a fellow person are described as a betrayal against HaShem. The verse joins the human and the divine dimensions of harm. We note this joining without building a full theology on it.
5. He shall return what he tookה.
Leviticus 5:23 says: when he has sinned and is guilty, he shall return the stolen item, or what he withheld, or the deposit, or the lost object he found. The return of what was taken is spelled out in detail.
So what does it mean to draw near? These passages suggest: to answer a call, to bring something of one's own, to keep a lasting covenant, and, where one has wronged another, to repair it concretely. The order of the wider passage, in which restitution is required alongside the guilt offering, is our closing emphasis: drawing near to HaShem passes through what we owe to people.
