What makes a space into a place of meeting?
To read the opening of the Mishkan instructions as a sequence from voluntary giving to shared building to a defined place of meeting, and to ask what foundations a space needs to become a place of encounter.
1. Whose heart moves themא.
Exodus 25:1-2 says: HaShem spoke to Moshe, saying: speak to the children of Yisrael and let them take for me an offering; from every person whose heart moves him you shall take my offering. The first material of the sanctuary is willingness.
The verse does not list a fixed amount; it names a source: the moved heart. Whatever is later built from gold and wood begins as an inner response. As our application, a shared space that people are meant to enter might first need people who want to give to it.
2. I will dwell among themב.
Exodus 25:8 says: they shall make me a sanctuary, and I will dwell in their midst. Verse 9 adds that they must make it according to all that HaShem shows Moshe, the pattern of the Mishkan and the pattern of all its vessels.
The verse says "in their midst", not "in it". Many commentators have drawn meaning from this wording; we note only the textual detail and do not build a doctrine on it. What the verses do establish is a combination: human making, and a pattern received from above.
3. Faces toward one anotherג.
Exodus 25:20 describes the cherubim spreading their wings upward, sheltering the cover, with their faces toward one another, toward the cover. Verse 21 instructs placing the cover on the ark and placing the testimony inside.
At the center of the sanctuary stands a design of two figures turned toward each other and toward what lies between them. We offer this as an image for reflection, not as an explanation of the cherubim: meeting involves facing another while also facing something shared.
4. I will meet you thereד.
Exodus 25:22 says: I will meet with you there, and I will speak with you from above the cover, from between the two cherubim on the ark of the testimony, all that I command you for the children of Yisrael.
The place of speech is defined precisely: above the cover, between the two cherubim. The voice comes from a space between, not from an object. As our reflection, a place of meeting is defined not only by what fills it but by the space it keeps open.
5. Foundations of meetingה.
Our passages move from willing hearts, to a sanctuary in the people's midst, to a pattern faithfully followed, to figures facing one another, to a voice in the space between. Each is a foundation for the next.
So what makes a space a place of meeting? These verses suggest: giving that comes from the heart, building that follows a shared pattern, orientation toward one another, and room left open for a voice. The exercise for this week is to look at one shared space in your life, a table, a room, a community, and ask which of these foundations it lacks.
