The guiding question

How does a people prepare to hear what is beyond them?

Learning objective

To read the invitation of Exodus 19, the scene at the foot of the mountain, and the opening words of the Ten Utterances as a progression from relationship to awe to address, and to ask what kind of readiness revelation calls for.

1. Carried on eagles' wingsא.

In Exodus 19:3-4 Moshe goes up to HaElohim, and HaShem calls to him from the mountain: thus shall you say to the house of Yaakov and tell the children of Yisrael: you have seen what I did to Egypt, and I carried you on eagles' wings and brought you to me.

Before any command, the people are reminded of what they have seen, and the journey is described as being brought "to me". Revelation here begins by recalling a relationship. That is our reading of the order of the verses.

2. A kingdom of priestsב.

Exodus 19:5-6 continues: and now, if you will listen to my voice and keep my covenant, you shall be to me a treasure among all the peoples, for all the earth is mine; and you shall be to me a kingdom of priests and a holy nation.

The verse holds two ideas together: a special relationship and a reminder that all the earth belongs to HaShem. Being chosen is set within a universal frame. We note this balance without entering the long discussions about the meaning of "kingdom of priests".

3. A trembling mountainג.

Exodus 19:16 describes the third day: thunder and lightning, a heavy cloud on the mountain, and the sound of a shofar very strong, and all the people in the camp trembled. Verse 17 says Moshe brought the people out to meet HaElohim, and they stood at the bottom of the mountain.

The people tremble and still come out to stand. Awe does not cancel approach here; the text joins them. Verses 18-19 add that the mountain itself trembled and the shofar grew louder while Moshe spoke and HaElohim answered him with a voice.

4. I amד.

Exodus 20:1-2 says that Elohim spoke all these words, saying: I am HaShem your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage. Verse 3 continues: you shall have no other gods before me.

The first utterance identifies the speaker through an act of liberation, and it speaks in the singular: "your God", "who brought you out". Whether the first verse is a commandment or a preface has been discussed among the commentators, and we do not decide. We note only that the address is personal, even when spoken to a whole people.

5. Readiness to hearה.

Our passages move from memory to covenant, from covenant to awe, and from awe to a personal address. Revelation in these verses is not only information; it is a relationship spoken into words.

So how does a people prepare to hear what is beyond it? These verses suggest: by remembering how it was carried, by accepting responsibility within a covenant, by standing even while trembling, and by allowing a word addressed to all to be heard as addressed to oneself. The exercise for this week is to read the first utterance slowly, as if spoken to you alone.

  1. Why might revelation begin with 'you have seen what I did' rather than with a command?
  2. How can awe and approach exist together?
  3. What changes when a word spoken to many is heard as spoken to you?
