How does freedom become a story we keep telling?
To read the first commandment of the calendar and the instructions for answering children as a framework that turns a single event of liberation into an ongoing practice of memory.
1. This month for youא.
Exodus 12:1-2 records HaShem speaking to Moshe and Aharon in the land of Egypt: this month shall be for you the head of months; it is the first for you of the months of the year. Before the people leave, they receive a way of counting time.
The command is given "in the land of Egypt", while the people are still enslaved. The word "for you" appears twice in the verse. As our reflection, freedom here begins by receiving one's own time, even before one's own place.
2. When your children askב.
Exodus 12:26 anticipates a future scene: when your children say to you, what is this service to you? Verse 27 gives the answer: it is a Pesach offering to HaShem, who passed over the houses of the children of Yisrael in Egypt; and the people bowed and prostrated.
The verse assumes that children will ask. The question is treated not as a disturbance but as an occasion that has been prepared for. The reaction of the people, bowing at the prospect of being asked, suggests that a future generation's curiosity is itself received as part of the redemption. That last point is our reading.
3. You shall tell your childג.
Exodus 13:8 says: you shall tell your son on that day, saying: it is because of this that HaShem acted for me when I came out of Egypt. The telling is in the first person: "for me", "when I came out".
Here the telling does not wait for a question. And the one who tells speaks as a participant, not as a distant reporter. As our application, freedom remains alive when each generation can say "for me" about a story it did not personally witness. This application is the lesson's; the verse states the command.
4. A sign on your handד.
Exodus 13:9 continues: it shall be for you a sign on your hand and a remembrance between your eyes, so that the Torah of HaShem may be in your mouth, for with a strong hand HaShem brought you out of Egypt. Verse 10 adds: you shall keep this statute at its appointed time from year to year.
Memory here involves hand, eyes, mouth, and calendar. The verses join bodily signs, speech, and a recurring time. The halakhic details of these signs are discussed elsewhere and are not our subject. What we draw is a pattern: what is to be remembered must be given a place in the body, in speech, and in the year.
5. A story that continuesה.
Our passages move from a calendar given in slavery, to a question anticipated in the future, to a first-person telling, to signs and a yearly appointed time. None of them is the exodus itself; all of them concern how it will be carried forward.
So how does freedom become a story we keep telling? These texts suggest: by marking time as our own, by welcoming questions, by telling in the first person, and by giving memory a place in daily life. The exercise for this week is to tell one story of deliverance from your own family or community in the first person, to someone younger.
