How does humble attention prepare the way for redemption?
To read three quiet moments at the opening of Shemot, the midwives' refusal, the people's cry, and Moshe's turning aside, and to ask how small acts of attention precede the great events that follow.
1. Two women and a kingא.
Exodus 1:15-16 records the king of Egypt speaking to the Hebrew midwives, named Shifra and Pu'ah, and commanding them to kill the male children at birth. Verse 17 says that the midwives feared HaElohim and did not do as the king of Egypt had spoken to them, and they let the children live.
The king is not named in these verses; the midwives are. The first act of resistance in the book belongs to two women whose motive is described as fear of HaElohim. Their action is not a battle but a refusal to carry out harm. That is our observation of the verses' details.
2. A cry that risesב.
Exodus 2:23 says that in those many days the king of Egypt died, and the children of Yisrael groaned from the labor and cried out, and their plea rose to HaElohim from the labor. Verses 24-25 continue: Elohim heard their groaning, remembered the covenant with Avraham, Yitzchak, and Yaakov, saw the children of Yisrael, and knew.
The people's cry is not described as a prayer with words; it is a groan from the labor. Yet it rises and is heard. The verse ends with a single word, "and Elohim knew", leaving its object unstated. We do not fill that silence; we note that attention precedes action in the narrative.
3. A shepherd at the edge of the wildernessג.
Exodus 3:1 finds Moshe shepherding the flock of Yitro, his father-in-law, leading it beyond the wilderness until he comes to the mountain of HaElohim, to Chorev. Verse 2 says the angel of HaShem appeared to him in a flame of fire from within the bush; the bush was burning and was not consumed.
Moshe is not in a palace or a sanctuary but at work, caring for someone else's flock. The text does not say why he is there. We note only that the revelation comes during an ordinary task carried out faithfully.
4. Turning aside to seeד.
In Exodus 3:3 Moshe says: let me turn aside and see this great sight, why the bush does not burn. Verse 4 continues: HaShem saw that he turned aside to see, and Elohim called to him from within the bush: Moshe, Moshe; and he said: hineni.
In the verse's order, the call comes after HaShem sees that Moshe turned aside. The text links the call to an act of attention. As our application, preparation for a great task may begin with a willingness to stop and look closely at something others might pass by.
5. Holy groundה.
Exodus 3:5 says: do not come near here; remove your sandals from your feet, for the place on which you are standing is holy ground. The first instruction Moshe receives is not a task but a limit and a gesture of humility.
So how does humble attention prepare the way? These passages suggest: through those who refuse to do harm, through a cry that is heard even without words, through faithful ordinary work, through turning aside to see, and through accepting a limit before receiving a mission. The redemption of the book begins quietly.

- Why might the Torah name the midwives but not the king?
