The guiding question

What does it mean to be called not only to receive blessing, but to become one?

Learning objective

To follow three moments in Avram's path, departure, generosity toward Lot, and trust, and to ask how a calling turns into a way of treating others.

1. A call without a mapא.

Genesis 12:1 records the command to Avram: go from your land, your birthplace, and your father's house, to the land that I will show you. The departure is described in three widening circles, while the destination is left unnamed. The call precedes knowledge of the place.

Verse 4 reports simply that Avram went as HaShem had spoken to him, and Lot went with him. The text records the going, not Avram's inner debate. We should resist inventing his feelings. What we receive is the shape of a response: a person moving toward a place he has not yet seen.

2. Blessing that moves outwardב.

Genesis 12:2-3 joins promise to purpose. Avram will become a great nation and be blessed, and his name will be made great; then comes the phrase: and be a blessing. Verse 3 ends by saying that all the families of the earth will be blessed through him.

Elsewhere in the parashah a city is built to make a name; here a name is given in connection with blessing others. We note the contrast with Babel as a reading across chapters, not as an attributed teaching. The calling, as these verses present it, is not complete when it rests only on the one who is called.

3. Generosity that prevents a quarrelג.

In Genesis 13:8 Avram says to Lot: let there be no quarrel between me and you, or between my herdsmen and yours, for we are brothers. In verse 9 he offers Lot the choice of direction: if you go left, I will go right, and if right, I will go left.

The one who received the promise of the land offers the first choice to another. The text does not tell us whether this was easy for Avram. It shows that peace between relatives was placed before advantage. As our application, generosity may sometimes mean letting someone else choose first.

4. Counting the starsד.

In Genesis 15:5 Avram is brought outside and told to look at the heavens and count the stars, if he can count them; so shall your seed be. Verse 6 says that he trusted in HaShem, and it was reckoned to him as righteousness.

Who reckoned it, and how, has been read in more than one way, and we leave that discussion open. For our question it is enough that trust is shown as a response to a promise not yet visible. A calling to be a blessing may require exactly this: acting generously now toward a future one cannot yet count.

5. The shape of a blessed lifeה.

Across these passages, blessing is never only a possession. It begins with departure, is defined as something for the families of the earth, appears in a generous offer to Lot, and is carried by trust in what cannot yet be seen. The verses describe Avram; the pattern is our way of gathering them.

So what does it mean to become a blessing? These passages suggest that it begins when a person asks not only what they have been given, but whom it could reach. The exercise for this week is modest: identify one place where you could let another choose first, or offer what you hold without first securing your own advantage.
