What foundations does a space need to become a place of meeting?
Read the opening of the Mishkan instructions as a sequence from voluntary giving to shared building to a defined place of meeting, and ask what foundations make encounter possible.
Laying a foundation
After the laws of Mishpatim, the Torah turns to building. Terumah describes materials, measurements, and vessels. Its first concern, however, is not gold but the hearts of those who give.
This study accompanies the song for Parashat Terumah, set at Yesod in Maqam Saba, the laying of a foundation. We read four passages and look for the foundations of meeting.
1. Whose heart moves themא.
Exodus 25:1-2 says, speak to the children of Yisrael and let them take for me an offering; from every person whose heart moves him you shall take my offering. The first material of the sanctuary is willingness.
The verse does not set a fixed amount; it names a source, the moved heart. Whatever is later built from gold and wood begins as an inner response. As our application, a shared space that people are meant to enter may first need people who want to give to it.
2. I will dwell among themב.
Exodus 25:8-9 says, they shall make me a sanctuary, and I will dwell in their midst, according to all that I show you, the pattern of the Mishkan and the pattern of all its vessels, so you shall make it.
The verse says in their midst, not in it. Many commentators have drawn meaning from this wording; we note the textual detail without building a doctrine on it. What the verses establish is a combination: human making, and a pattern received from above.
3. Gold within and withoutג.
Exodus 25:10-11 commands an ark of acacia wood, with measurements given, and says, you shall overlay it with pure gold, within and without you shall overlay it.
The inside of the ark, which no one will see once it is closed, is overlaid like the outside. Interpreters have drawn from this a teaching about integrity, inside matching outside. We offer that as a reading, not as the verse's stated purpose.
4. I will meet you thereד.
Exodus 25:20-22 describes the cherubim spreading their wings above the cover, with their faces toward one another, toward the cover, and says, I will meet with you there and speak with you from above the cover, from between the two cherubim.
At the center of the sanctuary stand two figures turned toward one another and toward what lies between them, and the voice comes from that space between. We offer this as an image for reflection, not an explanation of the cherubim: meeting involves facing another while facing something shared, and leaving room open.
Foundations of meeting
What makes a space a place of meeting? These verses suggest: giving that comes from the heart, building that follows a shared pattern, an inside that matches the outside, orientation toward one another, and room left open for a voice.
This week, look at one shared space in your life, a table, a room, a community, and ask which of these foundations it lacks. Add one: a voluntary gift, an honest inside, or a moment of open room.
