What does it mean to answer "here I am" when the road is hard?
Read Genesis 22 through its three answers of "hineni", and ask how presence toward God and presence toward another person are held together in the narrative, without claiming to resolve the Akedah.
One word, three times
The Akedah has been read in many profound and differing ways, and this lesson does not claim to settle its meaning. We take one narrow thread. The word hineni appears three times in the chapter, directed first toward God, then toward Yitzchak, then toward the angel.
This study accompanies the song for Parashat Vayera, set at Gevurah in Maqam Saba, a binding that stands at the threshold. We follow the word through the chapter and keep apart the narrative's details from our reflections on them.
1. A test announced to the readerא.
Genesis 22:1 tells the reader at the outset that after these things HaElohim tested Avraham. Then comes a call by name and the answer, hineni. Verse 2 gives the command with a striking sequence, your son, your only one, whom you love, Yitzchak.
The reader knows the word test; the narrative does not say that Avraham is told it. The first hineni is spoken before the command is known. We note this as a reading of the order of the verses: presence offered before the content of the task is revealed.
2. Rising earlyב.
Genesis 22:3 records actions only. Avraham rose early in the morning, saddled his donkey, took two young men and Yitzchak his son, split wood for the offering, rose, and went to the place of which HaElohim had told him.
The verse lists deeds and is silent about feeling. Many readers have heard great weight in that silence; we should not supply emotions the text withholds. What the narrative does show is presence taking the form of action carried out step by step.
3. Here I am, my sonג.
In Genesis 22:7 Yitzchak says, my father, and Avraham answers, hineni, my son. Yitzchak asks where the lamb for the offering is. In verse 8 Avraham answers that Elohim will see to the lamb, my son, and the verse ends, and the two of them walked on together.
The same word that answered God now answers a son. In our reading, presence toward the divine call does not cancel presence toward the person beside us. The word together appears just where the reader most expects distance. That is our observation of the wording, not a resolution of the chapter.
4. A call that stops the handד.
In Genesis 22:11 the angel of HaShem calls from heaven, Avraham, Avraham, and he answers, hineni. Verse 12 says, do not send your hand against the boy, for now I know that you fear Elohim. In verses 13-14 Avraham sees a ram, offers it in place of his son, and names the place HaShem will see.
The third hineni is an answer that makes stopping possible. Readiness, in this reading, is not only the willingness to go; it also includes the attentiveness to hear when to halt. The root of seeing links verse 8 with the name of the place in verse 14.
Going, staying, listening
These verses suggest a presence that goes, stays with the one beside it, and listens again. They do not make the road easy, and this lesson does not claim to explain why it was asked. They show how it was walked.
This week, notice one moment when you answer someone's call with your full attention, and one moment when you need to listen again before continuing. Name both in writing.
Keep the conversation going
- What changes when the same word, hineni, is spoken to God, to a son, and to an angel?
- Why might the narrative record actions but stay silent about feelings?
- Where do you need not only the readiness to go, but also the attentiveness to stop?
