What does it mean to be called not only to receive a blessing, but to become one?
Follow four moments in Avram's path, departure, the promise of blessing, generosity toward Lot, and trust, and ask how a loving call turns into a way of treating others.
A call that comes with a promise
Parashat Lech Lecha begins with a command and a promise in the same breath. Avram is asked to leave, and he is told that he will be blessed and become a blessing. The direction of the blessing, toward others, is part of the call from the start.
This study accompanies the song for Parashat Lech Lecha, set at Chesed in Maqam Ajam, the warm and open measure of kindness. We read four passages and keep apart what the verses state from what our reading draws from them.
1. A call without a mapא.
Genesis 12:1 records the command, go from your land, from your birthplace, and from your father's house, to the land that I will show you. Three things are left behind by name, while the destination remains unnamed. The call precedes knowledge of the place.
Verse 4 reports simply that Avram went as HaShem had spoken to him, and Lot went with him. The text records the going, not Avram's inner debate, and we should not invent his feelings. What we receive is the shape of a response: a person moving toward a place he has not yet seen.
2. Blessing that moves outwardב.
Genesis 12:2-3 joins promise to purpose. Avram will become a great nation, he will be blessed, his name will be made great, and then, be a blessing. Verse 3 ends with all the families of the earth being blessed through him.
In the previous parashah, builders sought to make a name for themselves; here a name is made great in connection with blessing others. We note this contrast as a reading across chapters, not as an attributed teaching. As these verses present it, the calling is not complete when it rests only on the one who is called.
3. Generosity that prevents a quarrelג.
In Genesis 13:8 Avram says to Lot, let there be no quarrel between me and you, or between my herdsmen and yours, for we are brothers. In verse 9 he offers Lot the choice of direction, if you go left I will go right, and if right I will go left.
The one who received the promise of the land offers the first choice to another. The text does not say whether this was easy for Avram. It does show peace between relatives placed before advantage. As our application, kindness sometimes means letting someone else choose first.
4. Counting the starsד.
In Genesis 15:5 Avram is brought outside and told to look toward the heavens and count the stars if he is able; so shall your seed be. Verse 6 says that he trusted in HaShem, and it was reckoned to him as righteousness.
Who reckoned it, and how, has been read in more than one way, and we leave that open. For our question it is enough that trust appears as a response to a promise not yet visible. A call to be a blessing may ask exactly this: to act generously now toward a future one cannot yet count.
Letting another choose firstלתת לאחר לבחור ראשון
Across these passages blessing is never only a possession. It begins with departure, is defined in relation to the families of the earth, appears in a generous offer to Lot, and is carried by trust in what cannot yet be seen. The verses describe Avram; the pattern is our way of gathering them.
This week, identify one place where you could let another person choose first, or offer what you hold without first securing your own advantage. Write down afterward what the offer cost you and what it opened.
