The problem is a refusal to attend to the ways of Torah and return in teshuvah, the movement of repentance and return. Rabbi Chizkiyah connects that distance with the absence of peace. Before geographical movement receives symbolic meaning, the reader faces a question about responsiveness. This beginning does not make stubbornness a virtue; it distinguishes a closed heart from the resolve needed to undertake Abraham’s journey. Sources: Zohar, Lech Lecha 1:1 – Zohar, Lech Lecha 1:2 2 · Revisiting places and stages EN: Much later, the account of Abraham returning on his journeys is read as a return through places and grades. The movement from the Negev to Bethel becomes a joining within a symbolic order of wisdom. The journey is consequently more than leaving a point behind: a previous place can be revisited and brought into a fuller relationship. Compare this passage with the opening. Attention is required both to depart and to return; repetition need not mean that nothing has changed, although that connection is our synthesis of the two passages. Sources: Zohar, Lech Lecha 18:1 – Zohar, Lech Lecha 18:2 3 · The question about an unfinished future EN: Abraham’s question about what he will receive while remaining childless introduces a different register. The source first reads the divine names as a joining of upper and lower worlds, then asks how Abraham’s question should be understood in relation to faith. The selected lines raise that difficulty; the continuation must be read for its answer. The route therefore makes room for a question within the life of the person who has already drawn near. His concern about continuity should not be reduced either to simple disbelief or to a general statement about another person’s worth. Sources: Zohar, Lech Lecha 29:1 – Zohar, Lech Lecha 29:2 4 · At the close: how teaching is entrusted EN: The final scene concerns Rabbi Abba’s sorrow and Rabbi Shimon’s response about words disclosed too openly. Learning among the companions includes learning how to hold a teaching with restraint. The section then ends with Isaiah’s promise of light, healing and righteousness. The closing concern with speech complements the opening concern with listening: receiving a teaching and transmitting it both require responsibility. This does not authorize us to invent a rule for every audience. It asks us to read the particular narrative, its correction and its concluding hope together. Sources: Zohar, Lech Lecha 35:91 – Zohar, Lech Lecha 35:92 5 · Bring the route together EN: Read the four stations as a sustained journey: listening, revisiting, questioning and transmitting. They are selected anchors across the complete section, not a substitute for its intervening discussions. For the week, identify a lesson you need to revisit and a conversation in which careful speech matters. Keep that exercise separate from the Zohar’s technical symbolism. The text’s broad movement becomes clearer when nearness is treated as an ongoing relationship that can include both questions and restraint.
