What distinguishes a bond that sustains life from togetherness that can still be misdirected? The opening places the individual within a relation that reaches beyond one lifetime. Torah study and covenant are presented as forms of belonging and continuity. This is the starting question for the later narratives of destruction and renewal: what can hold a world together? The passage’s praise should be read alongside the trials that the rest of the parasha places before human beings. Sources: Zohar, Noach 1:1 – Zohar, Noach 1:2 2 · The Flood and the language of agency EN: In the middle of the Flood exposition, small differences between ani, va-ani and hineni become significant. The source reads divine speech through relations of reception, conjunction and judgment. It also asks why the verse names both flood and water, distinguishing the destructive agent in its symbolic account from the instrument of destruction. The detail of language matters because the narrative is being read on more than one level. These distinctions do not replace the biblical story; they show how the Zohar adds an interpretive account of what the story’s wording carries. Sources: Zohar, Noach 17:1 – Zohar, Noach 17:2 3 · The rainbow opens into a vision of praise EN: The covenant after the Flood leads Rabbi Shimon to Ezekiel’s throne vision. The past tense of setting the rainbow is noticed, and the account turns to the living creatures, their joined wings and their song. Water now appears in the sound of those wings, within a scene of praise rather than the earlier scene of devastation. The comparison between these distant uses of water is our reading connection. The source itself follows a chain of verses about covenant, throne and song, allowing the renewal of the world to be heard as well as seen. Sources: Zohar, Noach 34:1 – Zohar, Noach 34:2 4 · Babel: agreement needs a worthy direction EN: At the end of Noach, Rabbi Yosei draws attention to the power of people acting with one will, even when that will rebels. Their division exposes them to dispersal. Rabbi Chiyya then emphasizes speech and looks toward a purified language through which peoples will serve HaShem together. Unity is therefore not automatically identical with righteousness. The ending asks how a powerful human bond may receive a different direction. Compare its common voice with the earlier song: shared speech can become a form of praise, but its purpose remains a decisive question. Sources: Zohar, Noach 44:20 – Zohar, Noach 44:21 5 · Bring the route together EN: The route begins with the bond sustaining creation and ends with the repair of human speech. Between them stand judgment and the covenant’s visible sign. For the study table, distinguish durability, agreement and righteousness rather than treating them as synonyms. An editorial application is to examine a community project: what joins its members, what it seeks and how it speaks about others. Return to the passages before deciding which part of that reflection comes from the source and which is our proposal.
