The guiding question

How does receiving a place in creation become a responsibility to care for a world and for one another?

Before we build an ark

Bereshit introduces the human being through two different scenes. In the creation account, humanity is created in the image of God. In the garden account, the human being is placed in Eden to work it and keep it. The first passage speaks of how humanity is created; the second describes a task within a particular place. Read together, they invite a question about the relationship between dignity and responsibility.

Keep the passages open as you read. For each step, ask what the verse says and what ethical connection this study proposes. This distinction leaves room to question the interpretation rather than treating every application as the verse’s explicit wording.

1. Dignity before achievementא.

Genesis 1:27 repeats the language of creation and image, then speaks of male and female. The image of God belongs to the account of humanity’s creation. The verse does not first describe an examination, an accomplishment, or a social position that earns this description. Its subject is the human being whom God creates.

We can draw an ethical distinction from that order: the worth with which a person is received is different from our assessment of that person’s achievements. This is a proposed implication of the verse, rather than a complete definition of the image of God. The passage leaves room for a much wider discussion of that expression; our question here concerns the way we encounter another person.

Consider a person whose contribution is easy to overlook: a quiet learner, someone new to a community, or someone whose work is rarely noticed. What would change if our first response were to make room for that person’s presence? This exercise is an invitation to examine our habits of attention, without claiming that this verse alone resolves every practical question about equality or communal roles.

2. A world worth caring forב.

Genesis 1:31 describes God seeing all that had been made and finding it very good. The verse closes with the evening and morning of the sixth day. Its language concerns the created whole as God sees it at this point in the narrative. It does not say that every later human action will be good, or that the chapters ahead will contain no conflict.

For our reading, this affirmation offers a starting point for care. We can approach the world with attention to its goodness, even while recognizing damage and failure. That connection is an ethical proposal: caring begins with learning to notice what is valuable, rather than treating the world only as material for our own plans.

3. Work and keepג.

Genesis 2:15 places the human being in the garden of Eden and gives a paired purpose: to work it and to keep it. Both verbs belong to the same sentence and the same setting. The task includes activity, while also naming a form of keeping or guarding. The garden is a place entrusted to human action.

The pairing suggests a useful question: what does our work cultivate, and what does it preserve? These aims can support each other, but they can also pull in different directions. We should leave that tension visible. Reading the verse as a prompt for responsible care does not turn it into a detailed modern policy, nor settle every disagreement about how to manage resources.

Choose one place or relationship entrusted to you: a home, a shared room, a learning partnership, or a communal project. Name one act that would help it grow and one thing that needs protection. Giving both questions space can reveal a neglected responsibility. This is an analogy for reflection, rather than an identification of our own situation with life in Eden.

4. The blessing of stoppingד.

Genesis 2:3 says that God blessed the seventh day and sanctified it, because on it God ceased from the work of creation. Blessing, sanctification, and cessation stand together in the verse. The text describes God’s relation to this day; this passage alone is not a full account of the later commandments governing human observance of Shabbat.

Alongside the garden’s task, this verse allows us to consider a limit to constant activity. Our proposed connection is that responsibility includes an ability to pause and attend to what is already present. A person can care for a world without continually remaking it. This reflection grows from placing the passages in conversation; it is not a practical ruling about the laws of Shabbat.

5. Where are you? Where is your brother?ה.

Genesis 3:9 records God calling to the human being and asking where he is. Genesis 4:9 records the question to Cain about the whereabouts of Abel his brother, followed by Cain’s reply that he does not know and his question about being his brother’s keeper. These are separate encounters in separate chapters. The first addresses the person directly; the second explicitly names a brother.

We propose reading these questions side by side as a movement from self-examination toward attention to another person. This comparison does not erase the distinct events in each story or reduce their meaning to a single lesson. It asks us to hear how a person can be addressed both about their own place and about a relationship for which an answer is sought.

For discussion, ask: which responsibility do I recognize, and whose absence have I stopped noticing? Begin with one honest acknowledgment and one act of care. I do not need to know another person’s whole life to notice that a relationship deserves attention.

Begin with one entrusted thing

Our reading has brought together three threads: the dignity of a created human being, the task of working and keeping a garden, and a question that names a brother. Their connection is the central proposal of this shiur. Responsibility can begin as a response to what we have received: a world, a place within it, and other people whose lives meet our own.

Choose one place or relationship for a concrete act of care this week. Name the person involved, the action, and a time to carry it out. Then return to the passages and discuss what this practice helped you notice about working, keeping, and attention to another person.
