The guiding question

Can a person receive a new name without leaving the old wound behind?

Learning objective

Read Yaakov's prayer, the struggle at the Yabbok, the meeting with Esav, and the confirmation at Beit El as stages of one transformation, and ask how change can be real while memory and vulnerability remain.

A royal transformation

Yaakov returns toward the land and toward the brother he fled. On the way he receives a new name. The parashah does not describe a sudden perfection; it describes a man who is changed and still limping.

This study accompanies the song for Parashat Vayishlach, set at Gevurah in Maqam Hijaz, a royal transformation reached through struggle. We read five passages and follow the movement from fear to a confirmed name.

1. Too small for all the kindnessא.

In Genesis 32:10-11 Yaakov prays to the God of his fathers and says, I am too small for all the kindnesses and all the truth that you have done for your servant, for with my staff I crossed this Jordan, and now I have become two camps.

Before any struggle, Yaakov measures his life against what he has received and finds himself small. The prayer that follows asks for rescue from his brother. Our reading: transformation here begins with gratitude and honest fear spoken together.

2. Left alone until dawnב.

Genesis 32:25-27 says that Yaakov was left alone and a man wrestled with him until the rising of dawn. The man touched the socket of his hip and it was dislocated. When the man asks to be let go, Yaakov answers, I will not let you go unless you bless me.

The identity of the man has been interpreted in many ways, and we do not decide. We note that Yaakov is injured and still holds on. The moment of being hurt is not necessarily the moment to let go; sometimes it is the moment to ask what blessing the struggle may yet hold.

3. What is your name?ג.

Genesis 32:28-29 asks, what is your name, and he answers, Yaakov. The reply follows, your name will no longer be said as Yaakov but Yisrael, for you have striven with Elohim and with people and have prevailed. Verse 32 says the sun rose for him as he passed Penuel, and he was limping on his hip.

Before receiving a new name, Yaakov must say his old one. Then the sun rises on a man with a new name who still limps. The text does not heal the injury in order to confirm the blessing. Change can be received while the old wound remains part of the walk.

4. They weptד.

Genesis 33:4 says that Esav ran to meet him, embraced him, fell on his neck, kissed him, and they wept. The meeting Yaakov feared ends, in this verse, with tears shared by both brothers.

The marks above the word for kissing in this verse have been read in more than one way, and we do not enter that discussion. For our question, it is enough that the new name is lived first in a meeting with the brother, not only in a private night.

5. A name confirmedה.

Genesis 35:10 returns to the theme. Elohim says, your name is Yaakov; your name will no longer be called Yaakov, but Yisrael will be your name, and he called his name Yisrael. The name is given twice, at night by the Yabbok and again at Beit El.

The Torah also continues to call him Yaakov in later passages, a fact interpreters have discussed. For us this suggests that transformation is not a single moment that erases the past. It is received, confirmed, and lived alongside what remains.

Walking with the new name

Our passages trace a transformation: gratitude and fear in prayer, a struggle held until dawn, an old name said aloud before a new one is given, tears with a brother, and a confirmation later on the road. The limp stays; the name grows.

Name one change you hope for in yourself. Write down honestly the old name you must first say, the habit or fear it replaces, and one meeting with another person in which the change could be lived this week.

  1. Why might Yaakov have to say his old name before receiving a new one?
  2. What does it mean that the sun rises while Yaakov is still limping?
  3. Why might the new name need to be confirmed a second time?
