Is a birthright something we are given, or something we must learn to value?
Read the struggle in the womb, the sale of the birthright, Yitzchak's wells, and his blessing as a sequence about inheritance and choice, and ask how a person learns to value what has been entrusted to them.
The royal firstborn
Toldot is a parashah of generations. Its central object is the birthright, the inheritance of the firstborn, and the question of who will carry it forward. The narrative is morally complex, and we will not pretend otherwise.
This study accompanies the song for Parashat Toldot, set at Tiferet in Maqam Rast, the balanced measure of the royal firstborn. We read five passages and ask what is inherited and what must be chosen.
1. A question taken somewhereא.
Genesis 25:22 says the children struggled within Rivkah, and she said, if so, why am I this way, and she went to inquire of HaShem. Verse 23 answers that two nations are in her womb, two peoples will part from within her, one will be stronger than the other, and the elder will serve the younger.
Rivkah does not hide her distress; she turns it into a question and takes it somewhere. The answer does not remove the struggle; it names its shape. As our application, a hard question honestly asked may not bring relief, but it can bring understanding of what one carries.
2. Eating, drinking, rising, goingב.
In Genesis 25:29-32 Esav comes from the field exhausted, asks for the red stew, and Yaakov answers, sell me your birthright as of today. Esav replies, I am going to die, so what use to me is a birthright. Verses 33-34 record the oath, the sale, and a rapid series of verbs, he ate, drank, rose, went, and Esav despised the birthright.
Both brothers can be questioned in this scene, and interpreters have judged them in different ways; we do not settle that here. The narrower point is in the rhythm: present pressure made a long trust seem worthless, and only after the meal does the text name what happened.
3. Re-digging the wellsג.
Genesis 26:18 says that Yitzchak dug again the wells of water that had been dug in the days of Avraham his father, which the Philistines had stopped up, and he called them by the names his father had called them.
An inheritance can be stopped up and must sometimes be dug out again. Yitzchak does not invent new names; he restores the old ones. As our reflection, valuing what we received may require labor to uncover it, not only a claim to own it.
4. The blessing of field and dewד.
In Genesis 27:27 Yitzchak smells the garments and blesses, see, the scent of my son is like the scent of a field that HaShem has blessed. Verse 28 continues, may HaElohim give you of the dew of the heavens and the fat of the earth, and abundance of grain and wine.
The circumstances of this blessing are complex, and the chapter does not hide the cost. We read only its content: it begins with a field already blessed and asks that heaven and earth continue to give. The blessing describes a gift that must still be received and tended.
Given and chosen
So is a birthright given or learned? These passages suggest both. It arrives as a gift, it can be traded away under pressure, it can be stopped up and dug out again, and it is blessed as something that must continue to grow.
Name one inheritance you carry, a practice, a language, a family custom, or a body of learning. Ask whether it is at risk of being traded for the pressure of the moment, and choose one step this week to dig it out again.
