The guiding question

What does a beginning ask of the one who receives it?

Learning objective

Read the opening of the Torah as a sequence of beginning, ordering, entrusting, and completing, and distinguish what the verses say from what this study proposes about receiving a world.

Standing at the threshold

Every reader of the Torah enters through the same door. Before there is a people, a law, or a sanctuary, there is a beginning that no human being made. The reader arrives after the world already exists. That simple fact gives this first shiur its question.

This study accompanies the song for Parashat Bereshit in our cycle, set at Keter in Maqam Saba, the highest threshold. We follow five passages and ask at each step what the verse states and what our reading adds. The connections between them are offered as a reading, not as the wording of the Torah.

1. A beginning that is givenא.

Genesis 1:1 opens with a single statement, that Elohim created the heavens and the earth. Before anything is described, the verse names the one who creates. The world does not enter the narrative as something that happened to be there. It enters as the result of an act.

The first word of the Torah has drawn many interpretations, and we will not decide among them. Our narrower point is that the reader meets the world as something received. If the beginning was not ours, then the first human question may be how to receive it well.

2. Light and separationב.

Genesis 1:2-5 describes the earth as tohu and vohu, with darkness over the deep and the spirit of Elohim hovering over the waters. Then comes speech, let there be light. Elohim sees that the light is good, separates between light and darkness, and calls them day and night.

The darkness is not abolished; it is given a name and a time. Order begins here with distinction rather than destruction. As an ethical reflection, we may ask whether our own beginnings need fewer things removed and more things set in their proper place.

3. An image that is addressedג.

Genesis 1:27-28 says that Elohim created the human being in his image, male and female, and blessed them, telling them to be fruitful, fill the earth, master it, and rule over every living thing. The human being enters the world already addressed by blessing and task.

The verbs of mastery are strong, and we will not reduce them to a modern slogan. What the order of the verses shows is that the commission comes after the image and the blessing. Whatever power is given, it is given to a creature who did not make the world it receives.

4. Completion and blessingד.

Genesis 2:1-3 reports that the heavens and the earth and all their host were completed, that on the seventh day Elohim ceased from the work, and that he blessed the seventh day and sanctified it. The first thing sanctified in the narrative is a day.

A beginning can be spoiled by never being allowed to end. The text gives the seventh day its own place after six days of making. The verse describes divine rest; the personal question is ours, which of our undertakings needs an honest point of completion. This is not a ruling on the laws of Shabbat.

5. Dust and breathה.

Genesis 2:7 describes HaShem Elohim forming the human being of dust from the ground and breathing into his nostrils the breath of life, so that he became a living soul. The same verse holds the lowest material and the most intimate gift.

A person standing at the threshold of the Torah is both. Our reading proposes that humility and dignity begin together here, the one from the dust and the other from the breath. We offer this as a reflection on the verse's two elements, not as a full teaching about the soul.

Receiving the week

Our five passages moved from a beginning that is given, to light set beside darkness, to an image addressed with a task, to a completed and blessed day, and to a creature of dust and breath. Together they suggest that a beginning asks first to be received, then ordered, then completed.

Choose one beginning in your coming week, a task, a conversation, or a new period of study. Before starting, name what you have received for it, then name one point at which you will stop and call it complete. Return to Genesis 2:1-3 at the end of the week.

  1. Why might the Torah name the creator before describing anything created?
  2. What is the difference between removing darkness and giving it a name and a time?
  3. How do dust and breath together shape the way we stand before a task?
  4. Which undertaking in your life needs an honest point of completion?
